Women of Folk

Proposed Industry: Consumer Magazines
Scope: Editorial Design

Overview: This class project is for Signature magazine, who, needed a multi-page centerpiece article for their latest issue. The primary article was to focus on the journey of female folk musicians of the past and present.

Final Work

Solutions: The final article design leveraged the gritty, grainy warmth of black and white photography, got big and bold in the new-hippy style typography, and stood up to the man with a David Bowie inspired lighting bolt arcing across each spread.

My Process

  • Reading through the article, you’ll learn that female folk lead singers and musicians in the 1960, 70s— and to this day—face overwhelming opposition simply for being who they were. This difficult, gritty road influenced the visual design of this article immensely, as did, the Woodstock-y feel-good flower-power vibes of the 60-70s. These women needed to be bold & the design of this work needed to reflect that.

  • Early typography sketches went a more campy, eclectic, “wild-and-free” route, but ultimately this design style choice, while fun and playful, glossed over these women’s struggles rather than addressing them more intentionally. These thumbnails however, were on the right track and were disorderly in all the right ways.

Gee whiz!
